The Internet is an excellent tool for keeping in touch with family and friends as well as learning about different places to visit, researching how to guides, and following the news. However, when using the Internet, we must be a little cautious about the reliability of sources as it is generally unregulated. This essay will discuss the merits of using the Internet as a source of information.
Many people feel the Internet is a more reliable source of product information than other traditional forms of media. People base their purchasing decisions on recommendations from their favourite blogger or friend on facebook. Word-of-mouth is the most powerful form of product information and the Internet provides a perfect medium for this type of suggestive marketing. It is also possible to get comprehensive reviews and ratings on products, travel locations, schools, etc. For example, parents can easily compare schools online, when choosing which school is best for their children.
On the other hand, the Internet is generally unregulated. This means information sourced from the Internet may not be so reliable. This is especially important in academic research, where the source of information needs to be impeccable. In this case, users need to be a little cautious and check the validity of their sources. There is a growing number of interactive social media sites such as Research Gate that have appeared to try and ensure the reliability of information on the Internet.
